ONLINE INTERMEDIATE POETRY
Students at this level are writing poetry with a focus on creating strong persona narrators and making skillful use of mood and tone. To build students’ technical skills, the teacher presents writing exercises involving free verse, traditional forms (sonnets, sestinas, etc.) as well as meter and syllabics.
The students follow the Writers Studio Craft Class syllabus -- along with readings distributed by the teacher -- from which the exercises are taken.
All exercises and critiques are shared online, making the class highly accessible. In addition, there is an optional live chat of one hour per week; this serves as a forum in which the students and their teacher discuss the assigned reading and resulting exercises. For students who are unable to participate in a chat, a transcript is later posted online. The Intermediate Online Poetry workshop is taken for three sessions. Starting with the third session, students also take the Writers Studio Craft Class.
The Intermediate Online Poetry Workshop is open to students who have completed Level II or have poetry publications, an MFA or four post-graduate writing courses. Places in this workshop are awarded on a case-by-case basis. To apply, please write the workshop teacher, Peter Krass, at email@example.com
“Every week, I presented a new story. Finally something did click, the very thing that's their specialty at The Writers Studio, emotional content.
—JENNIFER EGAN, author, A VISIT FROM THE GOON SQUAD, former Writers Studio student
