ONLINE ADVANCED POETRY
Students at this level are writing poetry with an increased focus on creating an individual voice and an emotional atmosphere. Exercises using free verse and traditional, received forms (i.e., sonnet, villanelle, sestina, and pantoum) as well as meter and syllabics are suggested in order to strengthen a student's technical skills. This class asks students to recognize what makes a poem engaging and entertaining to the reader. Students follow the Craft Class syllabus (along with readings distributed by the teacher) from which exercises are taken. Many students are finishing exercises and publishing poetry in literary journals and anthologies. The exercises, critiques, and teacher's critiques are all delivered to the student's email address, making the class very accessible. There is an optional live chat one hour per week, which serves as a forum for students and the teacher to discuss the assigned reading and the exercises that resulted from it. The chat helps to strengthen the sense of community felt by the class, and allows students to get to know each other. A transcript of the chat is posted on the bulletin board afterwards, for students who weren't able to participate in the chat. Open to students who have completed Level II or upon the recommendation of the teacher. Please contact lisa@writerstudio.com to apply for this class.
