Jennifer Egan Shares What She Learned at The Writers Studio

When Jennifer Egan, Writers Studio Advisory Board Member and former student, spoke with The New Yorker, she had this to say about The Writers Studio:

“I joined a workshop with Philip Schultz—the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, who now has a kind of institute called the Writers Studio…. It was a fantastic, reasonably priced workshop…. I realized that Phil’s focus was on getting at emotional truth, which, in a way, matters more than anything else. If you can’t make people feel at least interest or curiosity, you’ve got nothing. And I think that approach was exactly what I needed… I finally wrote a story that… ended up in my collection, and it was also the first story I sold—to The North American Review.”
