Students who enter the Intermediate Workshop are familiar with the technical terms that are the building blocks of The Writers Studio approach. There is increased focus on creating an individual voice and giving an emotional atmosphere or mood to each piece. This class asks students to recognize the specific qualities that make a narrative or poem engaging and entertaining to the reader. The goal of this class is to help students use a full range of techniques in order to create and sustain an effective artistic distance. Students begin to access greater emotional freedom and depth in their work. Students follow the Craft Class syllabus from which exercises are taken. The Writers Studio craft class is required in a student’s third session of the Intermediate Workshop. Students at this level are identifying their material and beginning to work on completing stories and poems. Students will usually stay in an Intermediate Workshop for at least three terms before moving into the Advanced Workshop.
