This special hybrid online-video class is open only to writers who have previously taken at least two terms of Michele Herman’s Memoir class and are ready to move forward with a longer manuscript. For this class there will be no new assignments. Instead, each week writers will bring in a two-page continuation of an assignment they began in a previous term or a new two-page piece designed to begin integrating previous assignments into a coherent whole (see exception below). Critiques will be done in writing in the online classroom as usual, with each student expected to write a minimum of three peer critiques per week.
The one-hour weekly video chat will be devoted to in-depth discussion as follows: once or possibly twice in the course of the six-week term, each student can sign up in advance to be a presenter. On their week they can submit up to six pages. Instead of providing written critiques to the presenter, classmates will respond verbally in the chat. The presenter can also use the chat time to talk about narrative or other memoir challenges they’re working on.
This class will hold a weekly video chat on Google Meet and critiques will be posted in the classroom.
