The Writers Studio Teen Workshop is a creative writing program geared specifically for the needs and passions of teens, based on the successful Writers Studio program for adults. It’s a fun, supportive space for young people to explore fiction and poetry.
Every week, students will practice a narrative technique from some of the best contemporary writers — such as Junot Diaz, Brian Turner, Cate Marvin, Niccolo Ammaniti, Tyehimba Jess, Susan Straight, Colson Whitehead, Jamaica Kincaid, Toni Cade Bambera, Sandra Cisneros, Major Jackson, Elizabeth Alexander, Nam Le, Jennifer Egan — addressing subjects pertinent to teenagers. Our practical, hands-on exercises are an engaging way for students to practice the fundamentals of effective storytelling and find their own voice.
The workshop is open for writers of all levels and experience to build community with people who share their interests. Students will learn The Writers Studio method of critiquing fellow writers by focusing on technique to create a safe space where everybody can improve their writing. Students will have the opportunity to join a weekly chat with the teacher where they can find additional support and join conversations about writing, art, and poetry.
The workshop is open to students ages 13-18 with all levels of writing experience. Students are encouraged to explore fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction.
Coursework is manageable and not meant to compete with regular school workload. The classroom is welcoming to all writers, including those with dyslexia and other language-based learning challenges.
