The Writers Studio Teen Workshop is a six-week creative writing program designed for teenagers, based on the successful Writers Studio program for adults. We’ll explore fiction and poetry, and write exercises based on the narrative techniques used by award-winning contemporary writers such as Lewis Buzbee, Tim O’Brien, Sarah Broom, Roxanne Gay, Lorrie Moore, James McBride and Robert Pinsky. We’ll read work aloud each week and discuss it. The last class will be a community reading and we’ll invite families and friends to attend.
The Teen Workshop is open to 14-17 year olds at all levels of experience where students will learn The Writers Studio method of critiquing fellow writers by focusing on technique. This is a safe space to experiment with the craft and techniques of good writing and an opportunity to join a community of supportive writers.
This online workshop is not meant to compete with regular schoolwork; it’s designed to be manageable and fun, and young writers with dyslexia and other language-based learning challenges are welcome to join. Class is taught by Sarah (Sally) McElwain, an award-winning published writer, who has been teaching writers age 12-86 at The Writers Studio for over twenty years. Her young students have won Scholastic Writing Awards, Adroit Contests for Young Writers, and used their creative writing on high school and college applications.
Class meets once a week for 6 weeks using technology that is simple and easy to use. We’ll use Google Meet with or without video enabled on computers or tablets with high-speed internet connections, or students can simply dial in via phone to participate. All assignments will be posted in advance and students’ written work will be uploaded as PDF or RTF files.
We look forward to welcoming the new class of teens to The Writers Studio, where we have been helping writers of all ages achieve their literary goals for over 30 years. Questions? Concerns? Write to the teacher: Sally(at)writerstudio.com.
