It’s hard to imagine what life will be like after this plague passes. We’re in the middle of it now and anxiety seems to be the new normal. When it does pass, it’s possible we’ll have to adapt to a new way of living and possibly even connecting to one another, both personally and professionally, most certainly through the imagination. Perhaps, now is the time to examine how the thematic elements of connection and change can be aids in our creative writing method in order to mine our interests and material.
In this eight-week workshop, we will collectively select a few favorite Writers Studio exercises from the past few years and analyze how connection and change have played a part in helping the writer create his/her work. It’s easy to miss how important these elements can be in our work, and paying attention to them may help us find the distance necessary to tell our stories. In addition, students will be asked to create a fresh exercise, which we will workshop in the standard Writers Studio format. You may either do a new exercise every week or work toward one longer piece.
This will be an online hybrid class, with all critiques and discussions to be held live via video chat at the scheduled time each week. Students will submit their work to the teacher and other students according to a weekly schedule in advance of the weekly live chat. It is open to all students of both poetry and prose who have taken at least one Writers Studio Level 3 or Intermediate Workshop or higher.
