Humor is serious business. A humorous narrator, whose personality and tone can range from gentle and bemused to outrageously sarcastic, can reveal deep material, and the exploration of technical strategies that humorous writers deploy can take humor writing to a new level. In this six-week class, we will try exercises based on accessible, yet artistically challenging and satisfying, models from fiction writers, poets, and nonfiction writers such as Mark Twain, Barbara Hamby, Jack Pendarvis, Tiffany Midge, Jade Chang, and Percival Everett. Students may write their exercises in any genre. In the optional weekly, unrecorded live discussions, we will discuss the week’s exercise and explore the model’s basic technical issues. All welcome.
This class is open to new, current, and returning Writers Studio students.
