Everyone says anger is a toxic emotion, but for writers, it’s particularly challenging because if you don’t have a strong persona, the work can degenerate into a rant, or worse, an editorial. And yet, these days there is plenty to get upset about. When you are working with such a strong emotion, you need a strong voice. In this six-week class, we will look at the persona narrators from poets such as Campbell McGrath and fiction writers such as Susanne Rivecca and Rick Moody, who, among others, have figured out how to access the loss and fear beneath anger to produce work that is aesthetic, transformative, and powerful. Think of this as literary anger management. Think of it as fun.
